Analize derby utakmica

Chelsea - Liverpool 1:1

Brendan Rodgers started with three centre-backs, but switched to a back four during the second half.

Roberto Di Matteo used his expected front four, but surprisingly used Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back, presumably because he wanted pace and/or attacking drive. Branislav Ivanovic shifted into the centre.

Rodgers included Jamie Carragher, with Martin Skrtel unavailable. Suso was only on the bench, having often started in a front three in recent weeks.

Liverpool dominated possession throughout the game, but became more dangerous when reverting to a back four.

Formation battle

It’s not often you see a 4-2-3-1 take on a 3-5-1-1 (or 3-4-1-2, if you prefer). The interesting battle is always between the wingers and the wing-backs – in other words, the positioning of Juan Mata and Eden Hazard against Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson. Do they try to track the wing-backs, or stay higher up?

One of Chelsea’s main problems this season, certainly in a defensive sense, is the lack of tracking from their wingers, particularly Hazard. However, there was no doubt they were forced into a more defensive role than usual by the energy of the Liverpool wing-backs. They didn’t actually have to track them all away, because of the presence of the Chelsea full-backs and the absence of any wide, higher Liverpool players, but they certainly didn’t press Liverpool’s outside centre-backs, and instead dropped back near the halfway line.

Liverpool dominance?

As a result, Daniel Agger and Andre Wisdom had plenty of time on the ball, and Liverpool dominated possession significantly in the first half. However, the majority of their passes were slow, sideways and not remotely penetrative, because Liverpool simply had too few players in attacking positions.

Liverpool change shape

Earlier in the day Manchester City turned their game around by moving from a back four to a back three. Rodgers did the opposite, bringing on Suso for the ineffectual Sahin – the Spaniard played just behind Suarez. The rest of the side completely changed shape – four other players moved significantly, and Liverpool were something more like a 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1 system.

Now they had more attacking options, more natural width on both sides, and an extra goalscoring threat with Suso getting into the box more naturally than Sterling. Again, the goal came from a set-piece rather than through any overloads or creativity in open play, but Liverpool had upped the pressure on the Chelsea defence.

Oddly, that was the only significant change of the game. Rodgers clearly doesn’t trust half of his bench, so Suso was his only replacement, while Di Matteo’s changes were broadly straight swaps, all after the equaliser had been conceded.

The line-ups after Liverpool moved to a back three. Suso, the substitute, and the players who changed position significantly are hightlighted.

Conclusion

Rodgers’ initial formation decision, and subsequent backtracking, was the main talking point. By starting with a back three, he seemed to stifle Chelsea’s creativity by pushing their wide attackers back, but robbed his own side of an attacking player, and the ball spent far too long in defence.

Whether that constitutes success depends upon one’s perception of these two sides’ abilities. It feels like Liverpool should be competing toe-to-toe with Chelsea, but then a 13th-placed side would generally be happy to go to a 2nd-placed side and create a tight, scrappy game based around set-plays, and come away with a point.

It was more of the same from Chelsea – Di Matteo has found a formula and is sticking to it (small defensive changes aside) for the majority of his games. Both Juventus and Liverpool have caused them positional problems with a back three, however.

Manchester City - Tottenham 2:1

Manchester City turned the game around with a strong second half performance, helped by Roberto Mancini’s mid-game formation switch.

Mancini named Aleksandar Kolarov on the left of midfield, with Samir Nasri ill. David Silva returned on the right, while Matija Nastasic was again at centre-back. Javi Garcia was on the bench, and Mario Balotelli left out completely.

Andre Villas-Boas decided to use Emmanuel Adebayor upfront instead of Jermain Defoe, and Brad Friedel was picked ahead of Hugo Lloris.

This was an interesting tactical contest – Mancini’s switch wasn’t the only key feature, and it wasn’t the sole reason City won, but it was certainly an important factor.

General pattern

4-2-3-1 v 4-2-3-1, more or less, and the home side dominated the match throughout, with 62% possession and twice as many shots. It was an unusual type of dominance, though – especially as they found themselves 0-1 down at half-time. Tottenham weren’t complicit in City’s superiority – they didn’t sit back as willing victims, and instead tried to hold a high line.

In these situations you expect Tottenham to counter-attack quickly. They’d done so superbly at Manchester United, with a famous victory based around direct dribbling from deep positions, chiefly through Mousa Dembele and Gareth Bale. However, with the Belgian injured and Bale barely involved on the left (despite David Silva’s narrowness and Pablo Zabaleta’s early booking), Tottenham actually created very little on the break – which was particularly surprising as Adebayor had an excellent game. He dropped deep away from the Manchester City centre-backs, and for long periods often appeared to be playing Clint Dempsey’s role as well as his own – the American had a very quiet game.

While Tottenham’s productivity in open play was minimal, they went ahead through a set-piece. This has been a repeated problem for City in recent weeks, and they contributed to their downfall here by conceding an incredible number of cheap, unnecessary fouls near the flanks – although they stopped doing so after half-time.

Spurs high line

Tottenham’s high defensive line was a problem, however. As mentioned after City’s draw against Ajax in midweek, Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero have a good relationship when fielded as the front two – Tevez works the space between the lines and tempts centre-backs to come towards play, while Aguero sprints in behind. The latter is such a complete forward that reducing him to a pure sprinter feels unfair, but his incredible acceleration and intelligent runs makes him a real threat in that respect. This continued well into the second half, with Aguero fluffing a potential one-on-one with Friedel because of poor control, with the score still at 0-1.

Of course, if exploiting a high line you need incisive passing in addition to pace, and Silva drifted inside typically from the right flank. In the first half, he constantly overhit passes that trickled through to Friedel, although the fact he was continually getting space (by overloading the central areas) was a real concern.

City change

On 57 minutes, Mancini made his dramatic change. Nastasic was sacrificed with Maicon introduced down the right. Zabaleta and Clichy became the outside centre-backs, Vincent Kompany played in the middle. Higher up, Silva became a permanently central playmaker, in a standard 3-4-1-2.

Previously it’s been difficult to understand why Mancini has moved to three at the back. Against Ajax in Amsterdam, he suggested he was deliberately playing three at the back because Ajax only used one striker, which goes against conventional wisdom in leaving one spare man at the back. Against Real Madrid the decision was broadly more understandable, but he made the mistake of leaving his side incredible unbalanced, and the subsequent concessions from the right-back zone were entirely predictable.

Here, it made more sense. Tottenham weren’t strictly playing two upfront, but Dempsey is looked upon as a forward by Villas-Boas, and with Lennon and Bale now pushed back towards their own goal, the City three could deal with Tottenham’s two forwards effectively.

The real benefits were higher up. Using Maicon against Bale was a huge risk considering the Brazilian’s problems against him a couple of years ago, but Bale appeared frustrated by his lack of involvement and didn’t offer Jan Vertonghen enough defensive support. Maicon got into one-versus-one situations and powered past the Belgian easily – although the flip side was that Bale went on a decent run down a bare flank, his only real contribution in the second half.

More significantly, Silva moved into a central position between the lines, in a zone Tottenham were completely overrun in. With Dempsey now the responsibility of the centre-backs, Spurs now had a problem in central positions. Broadly speaking, the two Tottenham centre-backs and the two central midfielders were forced to deal with five City players, and Silva was naturally the man to find – and use – the space most effectively.

Subs

The obvious question is why Villas-Boas didn’t try to shut the game down. His only significant change was in the final five minutes, bringing on Kyle Naughton for Lennon – but it was a surprise that Dempsey remained on the pitch when he contributed so little either defensively or offensively. Jake Livermore, hardly a celebrated player but a more defensive option than Dempsey, would have been an obvious substitute. Villas-Boas has probably been put off by his early experiences at White Hart Lane this season, when he twice lost 1-0 leads after defensive substitutions.

But the perfect recipe for a late comeback was being created. Tottenham’s high line was mixed with the tiredness of their midfielders and the lack of pressure on the ball, plus Silva becoming free. The Spaniard contributed to the first goal, although it was a scrappy move, but his clipped pass for the winner was sublime – and in Edin Dzeko City have a reliable if reluctant supersub to score important winners.

Conclusion

One constant theme – Tottenham’s high line – mixed with a neat tactical switch from Mancini. We shouldn’t entirely credit City’s comeback to his formation change, because they had the momentum even with their 4-2-3-1, and Tottenham always seemed likely to tire. However, putting Silva in a permanent central position worked out excellently, Maicon caused danger down the right, and City weren’t troubled defensively. For the first time, three at the back worked for City in an 11 v 11 game.

More negatives than positives for Tottenham, despite leading for half the game. They didn’t counter anything like as effectively as against Manchester United, they didn’t close the game effectively at 1-0, Villas-Boas didn’t use his bench well, and his players couldn’t cope with a high defensive line against Aguero.

Oba seta navijaca ce biti entuzijasticna vise nego sto je to uobicajeno, nakon sto ce Arsenal i Tottenham suociti na Emirates stadionu u prvom Severno-Londonskom derbiju ove sezone. Ova sezona je nekako za oba tima startovana na slican nacin, gde su trenutno na tabeli razdvojeni jednim bodom, sa Spursima kao onima koji imaju taj jedan bod vise i sede na 7. mestu trenutno.
Arsenal je jos jednom krenuo dosta sporo u novoj sezoni, ali su popularni Gunnersi uspeli da odrze dobar rekord u Capital One Cupu i prosli u narednu rundu, dok je Tottenham ispao od Norwicha u jednoj neubedljivoj partiji celokupnog tima. Njhivo rekordi u evropskim takmicenjima su isto tako veoma slicni, jer oba tima sede na 2. mestu u svojim grupama, Arsenal u Ligi Sampiona, dok Tottenham u Ligi Evrope, sa dobrim sansama da se kvalifikuju u dalji tok takmicenja.
Iako je uobicajeno da se domacinima da blaga prednost u ovakvim utakmicama, u ovom slucaju Arsenalu, ipak se od Spursa ocekuje da pruze mnogo veci otpor nego ocekivano, s obzirom da su trenutno mozda uigraniji tim. Oba tima ciljaju na visok plasam u ligi, TOP4 da budemo precizniji, sa Chelsea-jem i duom Manchestera kao glavnim favoritima za titulu i prva tri mesta, tako da ce se ove dve strane boriti sa sjajnim Evertonom, uvek neugodnim Newcastlom, iznenadjenjem prvenstva West Bromwich Albionom, kao i novim Liverpoolom koji jos napreduje doduse, za to cetvrto mesto koje vodi u evropsko takmicenje Lige Sampiona.

Topdzije nisu uzeli tri boda, tj nisu pobedili utakmici skoro dve nedelje, gde je poraz od Manchester Uniteda pracen remijima protiv Schalkea u Ligi Sampiona, zatim remijem 3:3 u jednom veoma uzbudljivom mecu protiv Fulhama proslog vikenda. Arsene Wenger se nada okoncanjem tog niza bez pobede u ovom Severno-Londonskom derbiju jer fanovi polako postaju nesigurni sa cinjenicom da Arsenal ima jedan od najgorih startova u poslednjih 20 godina.



I zato ova utakmica mozda dolazi u pravi ca, gde bi Arsene pobedom ne samo podigao moral svojim igracima i osigurao veoma vaznu pobedu, nego bi tako i smirio navijace i dao im neku nadu u svom pohodu ka vrhu. Odavno se prica o tome kako bi mozda Wenger trebao da se povuce iz trenerskog posla i zauzme neku direktorsku funkciju u klubu, ali to se izgleda na duze staze nece skoro desiti, da ne pricamo o tome da trenutno verovatno niko ne bi mogao da zameni Francuza koji je u klubu jos od 1996. godine, veliko poverenje ima u klubu, iako sam klub nije uzeo nikakav trofej poslednjih 6 godina.
Letnje pojacanje Olivier Giroud je izgleda konacno pronasao zavrnicu u svojoj igri i poceo da zabija, nakon sto je bio strelac dva gola protiv Fulhama proslog vikenda, tako da trenutno ima 3 gola u ligi na svom kontou, sto je moze se reci malo. Lukas Podolski i Santi Cazorla su takodje medju onim igracima koji su impresionirali ove sezone i od ovog tria igraca ce biti velika ocekivanja u ovom mecu, da daju ono najbolje od sebe sto mogu protiv Tottenhama danas.
Odlazak Robina van Persiea je svakako ostavio traga na tim koji je bio svakako poznat zbog svog napadackog stila i postizanja golova skoro deceniju i po. Arsenal takodje ima veliki broj igraca koji imaju problema sa fitnesom pred ovaj mec - Walcott, Sagna, Szczesny i Oxlade-Chamberlain su samo od nekih. Odbrana Topzija je ove sezone bila dosta propustiljiva, previse golova je primano zbog greske odbrane, zbog cega je Wenger izrazio misljenje i interesovanje za testiranje nove formacije, 3-5-2 pre svega, ali los tajming prijateljskih internacionalnih utakmica je znacio malo vremena za pripremu svog tima, i nove formacije ce verovatno sacekat par nedelja, posto ce raspored utakmica u narednim nedeljama biti gust i tezak.
Kada su u pitanju povrede i sastav igraca, Szczesny bi mogao nastupiti danas protiv Pevaca nakon sto je Mannone primio 3 golova protiv Fulhama, Sagna se takodje oporavio veoma dobro od povrede i spreman je da zameni vrlo dobrog Jenkinsona na mestu desnog beka. Mertesacker ce se pridruziti Koscielnom na centranim pozicijama u odbrani, jer zbog povrede Kieranna Gibsa, Vermaelen je prinudjen da igra na poziciji levog beka, posto Andre Santos nije zadovoljio Wengera kada je u pitanju fitnes i kondicija, takodje Brazilac je u losoj formi. Arteta i Wilshere bi trebali da budu par u veznom redu, dok ce Cazorla igrati nesto vise u napadu ipred ove dvojice, doduse, Spanac tesko da ce izdrzati ceo mec, posto je sredinom nedelje putovao sa reprezentacijom Spanije u Panamu. Podolski i Walcott bi trebalo da pruze sirinu na terenu, dok ce Giroud biti u samom spicu napada.
Ako Wenger bude razmotrio situaciju da Santi nije dovoljno fit za ovaj mec, Oxlade bi trebao biti njegova zamena u tom slucaju.

Moguci sastav

(4-2-3-1): Szczesny - Vermaelen, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Sagna - Wilshere, Arteta - Walcott, Cazorla, Podolski - Giroud.

Andre Villas-Boas je poceo svoju kampanju sa Pevcima, dosta pomeano moze se reci, gde je u isto vreme prikazana sjajna igra, ali isto tako i ocajna odbrana, zato trenutno i nisu u samom vrhu, vec leze na 7. mestu, sakupivsi 17 bodova do sada. U Ligi Evrope su takodje prikazali sjajne igre, trenutno drugi u grupi J, sa sjajnim sansama da prodju dalje u knockout fazu, iako naravno Andre cilja na povratak u Ligu Sampiona sledece sezone.



Sto je i donekle opravdano, jer cini se da Villas Boas ima sve komponete u svom timu da i konacno progura svoj stil i nacin igre koji mu je doneo slavu u Portugalu, ali i na evropskoj sceni. Losa epizoda u Chelsea gde je ima dosta gresaka i slabo se prilagodio nacinu igre u Engleskoj, te greske su ga ipak naucile necemu, i on sada ne nuzno forsira skroz ofanzivan fudbal, pa se donekle okrenuo gradjenu sjajne odbrane pre svega, i uz to, Spursi igraju veoma lep fudbal, do sada ne toliko profitabilan u ligi za sada.
Jermain Defoe se mozda vratio staroj formi, zabivsi 5 golova ove sezone, sa Baleom koji ima 3 na svom kontu. Sa druge strane, Adebayor nije uspeo da prekopira svoju proslu sezonu posle zaista teke transfer sage koja se zavrsila dobro po Tottenham, ali ocigledno ne dovoljno dobra posto Adebayor nije pruzio onoliko koliko je prosle sezone, samo jedan gol ove sezone.
Ali, Tottenham je uspeo da izvuce neverovatnu pobedu na Old Trafordu protiv Manchestera, priredivsi Alexu Fergusonu veliko iznenadjenje, tako da se Andre Villas Boas nada istom scenariju danas na Emiratima i pobedi koja ce im mnogo znaciti u nastavku sezone. Spursi su prosle sezone dosta nestpretno ispustili prednost od dva gola, posto je Arsenal ispalio 5 golova i mrezu Friedela kada su se ova dva tima poslednji put sreli.
Odbrana Spursa kao sto je vec receno je zaista izrasla u veoma jaku i stamenu odbranu, pogotovo sa dolaskom Jana Verthongena, sto se ne moze reci za Arsenal, posto su izgledali veoma slabo pozadi u poslednjm mecevima, i Adebayor ce ocigledno biti kivan na dobar performans na Emiratima protiv starog tima, posto Villas Boas i dalje ima poverenje u ovog internacionalca iz Togoa.
Friedel je ostao prvi izbor za golmana, iako je na leto dosao sjajni golman Lyona Hugo Lloris. Naugton ce verovatno poceti mec na poziciji desnog beka posto se Kyle Walker jos nije potpuno oporavio od njegove povrede tetive. Gallas ce ciniti centarski par u odbrani zajedno sa Caulkerom, dok je Verthongen zacementirao svoje mesto u prvoj postavi na poziciji levog beka. Sandro i Huddlestone ce izgleda ciniti par u veznom redu, dok ce Lennon i Bale ciniti krila. Adebayor bi trebao poceti svoj drugi mec kao starter ove sezone, posto Defoe ima problema sa povredom, takodje Clint Dempsey ce biti poluspic iza Adebayora. Jedno od pojacanja ove sezone Moussa Dembele jos nije spreman zbog povrede.

Moguci sastav

(4-4-1-1): Friedel - Naughton, Caulker, Gallas, Verthongen - Sandro, Huddlestone, Bale, Lennon - Dempsey - Adebayor.

O utakmici, igraci u fokusu....

Tottenham ulazi u ovaj derbi dosta siguran, barem tako izgleda i to ce im dati mozda malu prednost, ali isto tako ne treba zaboraviti domaci teren i navijace koji mogu inspirisati Arsenal i igrace da igraju na prepoznatljivom nivou i uzmu sva tri boda danas.
Wenger nece moci da implementira novu formaciju 3-5-2, tako da treba ocekivati isti onaj stil koji krasi Arsenal, a to je lep napadacki fudbal, sa puno pas igre, dakle ubrzan tempo, sto takodje dosta slican stilu koji Boas forisra, a to je veoma brz napad preko krila, a za tu brzinu svakako ima igrace, a to su Bale i Lennon.



On je uvek bio proglasavan najboljim krilom na Ostrvu, iako to ponekad nije dokazivao na pravi nacin, ali cini se da je ce ove sezone pokazati pravi sjaj. On je glavni igrac sigurno, i nekako se od njega ocekuje distribucija lopte ka napadacima, u nedostatku kreativnih igraca u sredini i bez povredjenog Dembela, on je verovatno jedini izbor za playmakera, situacija u kojoj on moze da se snadje, ali i svojim individualnim kvalitetom da pokaze sav svoj kvalitet i umece, definitvno igrac koga se Arsenal treba cuvati, najopasnija pretnja po gol ce biti on.



Zato na drugoj strani, svakako Cazorla je igrac koji ce ciniti najvecu pretnju po gol Pevaca. Letosnje pojacanje se dokazalo odmah na startu, pokazavsi svoju odlicnu viziju na terenu koja neumoljivo i krasi sve Spanske veznjake, takodje sjajan na lopti i u svakom trenutku zna da uradi pravu stvar na terenu, igrac od koji je i kompletniji od Velsanina, pa tako se moze reci da je on mnogo veca opasnost za Pevce, ali problem moze biti njegov fitnes i pitanje je da li ce on uopste startovati.
Treba napomenuti da je i Walcott u sjajnoj formi i da je on potencijalni X faktor na ovoj utakmici, sa Giroudom koji je poceo da zabija, moze se reci da ARsenal ima vise raspolozenih igraca.

Svakako derbi koji ce biti izuzetan, gde ce oba tima gledati da napadnu a ne da se brane, i zbog mozda slabije odbrane ARsenala u poslednje vreme i veoma dobre Spursa, cini se da iako gost, Tottenham je ovde blagi favorit.
