                • Manchester United aim to poach Tottenham Hotspur academy chief

Manchester United have identified Tottenham Hotspur’s head of coaching and player development, John McDermott, as the man they want to revamp their academy. The Times revealed yesterday that United’s head of youth player recruitment, Derek Langley, is planning to terminate his 16-year association with the club at the end of the season and after an extensive consultation process McDermott has emerged as their leading target.

United have yet to speak to Tottenham about McDermott, and an approach would not be welcomed. McDermott is held in very high esteem at White Hart Lane and is credited with bringing through the crop of home-grown players who have played an instrumental role in Tottenham’s resurgence under Mauricio Pochettino, including Harry Kane, Ryan Mason and Tom Carroll, as well as other recent first-team players such as Steven Caulker and Andros Townsend.

McDermott started Tottenham’s academy from scratch in 2005, when coaches such as Chris Ramsey and Alex Inglethorpe were among his first appointments, and despite an initial budget of only £900,000 the project has gone from strength to strength. In addition to Kane, Mason and Carroll, Tottenham are hopeful that exciting teenage talents such as Harry Winks, Joshua Onomah, Nathan Oduwa and Cameron Carter-Vickers could be first-team players of the future.

McDermott is also believed to have been instrumental in managing Dele Alli’s transition from MK Dons after his £5 million transfer last season, which helped him make such an excellent start to his career at Tottenham.

United believe a “ground zero” approach similar to Tottenham’s 11 years ago is required to improve their academy after the failure to produce many first-team players in recent years, although it will be difficult for them to prise McDermott away from north London. In addition to his loyalty to the club, McDermott has also developed a close working relationship with Pochettino, a situation that may not be replicated at United given the uncertainty over Louis Van Gaal’s position.

Pochettino took the unusual step of publicly praising McDermott’s work earlier this season, as he credits him with not only developing talented players but also establishing a healthy culture and attractive playing style throughout the club. “We have a very strong staff on the academy and a very close relationship with John Mc- Dermott,” the Argentinian said.

Tottenham would strongly resist any approach for McDermott and it is unclear whether he would want to leave. While the movement of technical staff between Barclays Premier League clubs is relatively rare, Tottenham poached Paul Mitchell from Southampton as head of recruitment last season, while they lost Frank Arnesen to Chelsea in 2005 in a deal that cost their London rivals £5 million in compensation.

United are planning to make at least two senior academy appointments, including a specialist in recruitment and administration and someone to oversee their junior coaching programme.

Ovo 9:9 naravno nije realno stanje.

Edit.
