Aleix Espargaro To Replace Canepa For Rest Of Season?
No motorcycle has acquired quite such a fearsome reputation as the Ducati Desmosedici GP9. Though there are no doubts about the speed of the Ducati - Casey Stoner has proved the bike is fast over and over again - there are huge question marks about its ridability. Loris Capirossi went from being a title candidate to an occasional podium visitor on the 800, Marco Melandri turned from podium regular to backmarker, and Nicky Hayden is only just starting to turn around his miserable start to the season and make a return to the front half of the pack. Marco Simoncelli, Alvaro Bautista and Jorge Lorenzo all turned down the chance to ride the Bologna Beast.
Yet the bike is not impossible to go fast on. Where others have failed, substitute rider Aleix Espargaro has succeeded fairly spectacularly, posting the 5th fastest race lap at last week's Misano MotoGP round, and finishing ahead of MotoGP regulars Randy de Puniet, Niccolo Canepa and Gabor Talmacsi in just his second race. He also managed to qualify at Misano just over a tenth of a second slower than double World Superbike champion James Toseland on the Tech 3 Yamaha.
So impressive has his progress been that two things happened after the Misano MotoGP round. The first was that the Spaniard - brother of the Indianapolis 125cc race winner Pol Espargaro - was whisked off to hospital on Monday to have surgery for arm pump. The second is that rumors immediately emerged that Espargaro is to be drafted in to replace his team mate Niccolo Canepa for the rest of the season.
The haste with which the operation was performed would seem to confirm the rumors. Although Espargaro is currently booked to ride the Promoracing Moto2 bike at the next round of the Spanish championship, the Spaniard has been switching duties between Moto2, 250cc and MotoGP, with no firm commitments in any of the classes. Having surgery early would allow him to be fully fit and recovered for the next round of MotoGP at Estoril at the beginning of October.
Certainly, Ducati feel that they need some help in the Pramac team. Niccolo Canepa was bumped up early, switching from the Superstock 1000 class - where he was European champion - a support class for the World Superbike series, to MotoGP, the pinnacle of motorcycle road racing. The step has proven to be too great, and Canepa has never lived up to Ducati's hopes for the young engineering student, despite the strong times the Italian has set when working for Ducati as a test rider. Canepa is likely to return to the World Superbike paddock, either in Superbikes or Superstock, but he is almost certain to be out of MotoGP for next season.
Bringing Espargaro in early allows the Pramac team a little time to evaluate the Spaniard, and see if the rapid progress he has shown since coming into the series continues. If Espargaro continues to get quicker, and starts getting into the top 10, his substitute ride could well turn into a permanent gig for next season.

Bulgaria to Build Formula 1, Moto GP Track near Capital Sofia
Bulgaria is going to build a track for Formula 1 and Moto GP races near the capital Sofia.
This has been announced by Member of Parliament from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (and former Interior Minister (2005-2008), Rumen Petkov, who is also the chair of the Organizational Committee for the Bulgarian Grand Prix in motorcycling.
"We have signed a contract for the Moto GP race, and we also have reached an agreement on a Formula 1 race coming to Bulgaria. We hope that everything will go well, and that we will be able to combine the tracks for the two races in one," Petkov is quoted as saying by the Trud Daily.
In his words, the Formula 1 and Moto GP track will be constructed on the place of the former military air base at Dobroslavtsi, Novi Iskar Municipality, about 12 km north of Sofia.
Bulgaria's preliminary contract with Moto GP says that the tract must be completed by the end of January 2011; the negotiations with Formula 1 have been for hosting a race in the fall of 2011 or 2012.
Petkov believes that Sofia's proximity to several other large Balkan cities - Athens, Belgrade, Bucharest, Thessaloniki - would be sufficient to attract the necessary audience for the Formula 1 and Moto GP races.

Rossi Faces 2.5 Million Euros In Unpaid Accountants Bills
2007 was a very difficult year for Valentino Rossi. In addition to being outclassed by a blisteringly fast Australian on a Bridgestone-shod Ducati, the Italian faced a gargantuan 112 million euro tax bill from the Italian authorities, who claimed that Rossi had actually been living in Italy while claiming to be resident in London. Early in 2008, Rossi reached a settlement with the Italian tax authorities, agreeing to pay around 30 million euros in back tax, a move which also allowed him to move back to Italy and live in Tavullia amidst his friends and family. Peace and stability had returned to Rossi's existence.
That tranquility is about to be rudely interrupted. According to reports from the Italian press agency ANSA.it, Valentino Rossi is about to be sued by his accountants, the very people who got him out of his previous tax troubles. The accountants firm Cesaroni-Cappellini are claiming that Rossi owes them between 1.7 and 2.5 million euros in fees. The firm claim that their agreement with Rossi include a clause granting them between 1% and 1.5% of the money they managed to save him in taxes. As the reduction in Rossi's tax bill they are claiming to have achieved is around 170 million euros, that would leave Rossi with multi-million euro bills to pay.
The firm of accountants told ANSA that they were "very disappointed" at being unpaid after saving Rossi such a significant amount of money. According to GPOne.com, Massimiliano Tasini of Cesaroni-Cappellini's Pesaro office said that the firm had kept a low profile so far, to avoid damaging the reputation of the reigning World Champion, but they could no longer let the situation stand. Tasini described the amount owed by Rossi as "infinitessimally small" in relation to their entire annual turnover, but said that the amounts they had saved Rossi were significant.
The firm is due to issue a press release on Monday containing full details of the case, and will be presenting the case to the Italian Order of Accountants. If the Order finds in Cesaroni-Cappellini's favor, Rossi would have 40 days to appeal against the ruling. ;D
