    • Kada igra prvi mec?

                  • After his resurging form and growing confidence took a dent in Melbourne – the Spaniard bowing out in the first round of a Grand Slam for just the second time ever – Rafael Nadal's focus was switched swiftly to the clay-court season. What could have been immense public pressure to perform well on his favourite surface, the 29-year-old instead made a task he had set himself to accomplish. Unafraid to state that his hopes were riding high on this part of the season, Rafael Nadal came to Buenos Aires with sheer determination that he would succeed on the dirt.

So far, although he has looked inconsistent, Nadal has been showing much promise. After a first round bye, he dismissed old foe – and occasional doubles partner – Juan Monaco in two sets, 6-4 6-4. And on Friday, his serve was broken just once during a 7-6(3) 6-2 victory over Italy's Paolo Lorenzi. The key point: There were more than mere flashes of brilliance.

Once again, the Spaniard was not without his moments of roughness. Some of the unforced errors that sprang up at key moments – to go down break point, for example – will likely be penalised when he faces Dominic Thiem in the upcoming round. Yet on the whole, Rafael Nadal showed us why he is renowned as the King of Clay. His topspin heavy shots are an immediate weapon in themselves, robbing opponents of the ability to play their own shot how they would like. Paolo Lorenzi played well above his world ranking of no. 52 during the first set, but Nadal's comfortability on the surface was evident as much when he was down as when he was up. Down break point, he did not seem to bat an eyelid – saving three of the four he faced. And all his vintage clay-court shots – off forehand, banana shot, backhand pass, forehand pass, cross-court pass – were on display. Certainly, the Spaniard seemed much more at ease in going for small margin and depth on his favourite surface, which are both qualities his spin-reeling game requires.

But on Saturday, one thing Rafael Nadal cannot afford to do is start slowly. While his first serve percentage crept up to 69 by the end of the match, he was making just 50 percent of them early in the match, and second serves alone – despite the fact he won 60 percent of them against Lorenzi – may not be enough to stay safe versus Dominic Thiem.

So, why all the talk about Thiem? This is why: Because the overlooked 22-year-old with the wonderful one-handed backhand and a greater consistency than Grigor Dimitrov, who was constantly pushed to the sidelines of conversations and speculations as his generation ascended the ranks, has been displaying a pretty awesome clay court game.

Facing Dusan Lajovic on Friday, Thiem needed just 1 hour and 19 minutes to swat the Serb aside: 6-4 6-2. En route to doing so, he won 89 percent of his first serve points, and saved all five break points he faced. In the first set, he dropped a mere five points on serve in total, with only one coming on a first serve. His return game was also on point, as he secured a solid 42 percent of first serve return points won, and 45 percent of second serve return points.

This coming after he fought through his opening two rounds in three sets each, it seems that Thiem has now overcome the difficult surface transition – just in time for a second meeting with top seed Rafael Nadal.

Not only did Dominic Thiem's last meeting with the clay-court legend come on the dirt, but it came at Rafa's palace: Roland Garros, back in 2014. This was the most recent year that Nadal won the event, and he charged past his young opponent 6-2 6-2 6-3. As it happens, this was during a period when the 14-time Grand Slam champion's form was under scrutiny, and he ended up throwing criticism back in the faces of the criticisers.

But since then, Nadal's French Open supremacy has taken a knock, and his struggles of the not-so-distant past – and the present – have been well documented. If Dominic Thiem were ever to pounce, now would be the time.

Still, to anyone who has watched Nadal on clay this week, the moments of sheer greatness have been undeniable...

Promjena trenera? Svakako mu treba netko, da popravi servis. Servis baš ne štima.

Problem predstavaljaju veliki broj UF errorsa. U 1.setu jih je imao 22. Nekad bi mu trebala 3 meča dai jih napravi toliko puno

Problem jeste i njegova fizička izdržljivost.

                                A danas?

Mentalna snaga? Katastfofalna u 2015 i 2016.

                                SF: TSONGA, SOCK
                                FINALE: FERRER, FOGNINI, THIEM, ISNER

Prognoze. Sve osim finala bilo bilo katastrofa.
