Tako si i juce bez ikakve potrebe pominjao sta brani Federer do kraja godine i nasao mu neki poraz u finalu Masters Kupa.

Doubt hangs over Nadal as he faces confident Djokovic for Open title

NEW YORK -- He is known for nothing if not mental toughness, but the legendary steel of Rafael Nadal has been put to the fire like never before in 2011.

The defending U.S. Open champion is winless in five matches against Novak Djokovic this year, with each of those meetings coming in finals. The first four were at Masters 1000 events -- tournaments one click lower in prestige than Grand Slams -- at Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Rome. But not until Nadal ceded the Wimbledon title and the No. 1 ranking to Djokovic with shockingly little resistance in July did the 25-year-old Spaniard confess to creeping feelings of self-doubt.

"I am not very happy about my mental performance against him this year, because for moments I didn't believe 100 percent with the victory," Nadal said Saturday after progressing to Monday's U.S. Open final against Djokovic (4 p.m. ET, CBS), which marks the first time the top two seeds will play for the men's title since Pete Sampras beat Andre Agassi in 1995.

              "That's big problem."

More than any of Nadal's previous six matches here in Queens, Monday's showdown with Djokovic will take place in the six inches between the ears. And Djokovic, whom Nadal calls "obviously the favorite," is hardly wanting for confidence. "I know that I have a game that is good enough to win against him," he said. "I proved that this year on three different surfaces."

Nadal is all that stands between Djokovic and one of the greatest individual seasons in tennis history, a campaign that would rank favorably with Rod Laver in 1969, Jimmy Connors in 1974, John McEnroe in 1984 and Roger Federer in 2006. The 24-year-old Serb is 63-2 with nine titles and can become just the sixth man to win three majors in the same year, joining such esteemed company as Laver, Connors, Mats Wilander, Federer and Nadal.

How did Djokovic turn the corner against Nadal after losing 16 of their first 23 matchups? It wasn't just the drastic step of swearing off pasta, pizza, muffins, pretzels and other gluten-rich foods after discovering he was allergic to the protein last year. He's also made considerable progress on his serve, particularly in the delivery, which Nadal has struggled to read in recent meetings. Djokovic's once-iffy forehand has finally caught up to his two-handed backhand, which enables him to crush winners off either side. His redoubled stamina translates to improved court coverage and ability to hit on the run, forcing Nadal to hit two or three more balls than he's accustomed to: Djokovic is the first player in anyone's memory to consistently outslug Nadal in extended rallies. "His movements are better than before, he's having less mistakes than before," Nadal said. "He's a very complete player."

No one in today's game can probe and exploit a weakness better than Nadal -- see Rafa's steady diet of high-bouncing balls delivered to Federer's backhand side -- but what if your opponent has no weakness? "You have Novak in front and you say, 'How can I beat him?' The backhand is fantastic, the forehand is fantastic, the serve is doing really well, the movements are probably the best in the world today," Nadal said. "The only way to beat him is believe in the victory, play aggressive and play every moment perfect."

It's easily overlooked amid the hubbub of Djokovic's historic season, but the stakes are high for Nadal too. He's one win away from an 11th Grand Slam title and level terms with Laver and Bjorn Borg. Rare air indeed, but pursuing the ghosts of tennis past means little if Nadal can't answer the challenges of the present.

                • Evo nekoliko razmišljanja teniskih stručnjaka o nekim događajima sa ovog US Openu:

On CBS, John McEnroe calls Djokovic's season "the greatest year we've ever seen in the sport of tennis."
                  Matt Cronin
Amazing to me that Mac already has said Novak's year was "the greatest in history of sport of tennis" Uh, Rod Laver 1969 pretty damn good
Crazy thing to me is Mac always downplaying his own accomplishments. HIs 1984 right there with Novak's 2011
U know what LAver did in 69? He beat all the best pros and former best amateurs to win 4 Slams in 1 season. Take a bow
Funny but we could argue either way - Laver winning Slam on just grass & clay & Novak on medium speed surfaces
                  Matt Cronin
Serena could face possible fine or suspension for code violation. Still on probation. Brian Early to review tape. Possible decision Monday

Between Federer's presser yesterday where he dismissed Novak's lucky play & Serena's presser where she wouldnt discuss berating chair I don't think I have ever been more disappointed in the public faces in one weekend of 2 of the sports greatest champions. Get real

(Federer's comment wasn't anywhere near that bad and shouldn't be lumped in w/ Serena's. (reakcija twitteraša na prethodni tweet)) - Realize they r different, but comparing world No. 1 to "lucky" juniors who once zoned against him totally uncool

( I get where one might see Serena as being unsportsmanlike but doesn't Roddick do what she did all the time?? does he get fined or suspended? Is it okay for a man but not for a woman to express emotion? I'm lost on all this.) - He has gotten fined but I dont remember him threatening an official -- big difference
(Which code did Serena violate?) - Glad u asked cause we couldnt hear her then. When she got code violation it was when she was shaking racket at ump... Threat was 'If you ever seen me walking in the hallway u better walk the other way'

(Even Nole admitted that he closed his eyes and went for that shot. That's maybe a strange bit of luck.) - Nole: "I read his serve and I was on the ball and I had to hit it hard, and it got in, luckily for me." Note 'read his serve'
( your right about Serena.....but I entirely disagree with you about Roger.......I thought he was class considering the questions he was being asked. I love when you guys ask if they are disappointed after a loss) - Luv the 'u guys' So when Berdych said he didnt vote 4 Rog 4 Sportsmanship award cause of '10 Wimby comments, what did u think

(what did u think about how Novak played the crowd after that miracle forehand?) - I thought that was very bold and somewhat strategic by Nole. Bit of gamesmanship
                  Neil Harman
I frankly think they should round up the people who clap when a player misses a first serve and frogmarch them from the premises

Great call from umpire Asderaki there. A shout of 'Come On' before SS touched the ball, the point is hers. Here we go again....Serena pissed Code violation, verbal abuse, warning Williams. It's getting tasty This has affected Stosur much more than it has Williams. A sedate crowd has come alive. She's missing now and nervous. Crowd horribly biased Play by the rules. Fairness. American tennis crowds. Come on What Serena is saying to this umpire is completely unacceptable. We should be seeing the referee, he's probably under a table somewhere
(US crowd is 'horribly biased' cheering for its own player? Like Henman/Murray at Wimbledon??) - No, in the sense that they are cheering Stosur mistakes, doubles, everything. Utterly moronic I think it comes from believing that people like Kim Kardashian are actually 'real'
Stosur has got her focus back. Leads 4-3 with a break in the 2nd. There may be a certain justice after all
Serena side-stepping every question about umpiring outburst. "I'm just so glad to be here," she says. "I was just in a zone and I zoned out"
Apparently Serena Williams will receive a $2,000 fine and her outburst is not considered a major offence. Probation over

Novak Djokovic comes on wearing an FDNY cap. Class

There are some quite stupid people who get into this stadium. Rather than strut around in macho fashion, why don't stewards eject them?

That's a time violation each. Will Mr Ramos have the bottle to give a point penalty the next time they go over the allotted time? #thinknot

Djokovic complains when some moron shouts out in the middle of a rally "This is f***ing unbelievable" And I have to say, he's right

I'd love it one day if someone actually said in their presentation speech that this crowd stinks and he/she would rather play anywhere else

(Why does the crowd stink Neil whats wrong with Arthur Ashe?) - Poor manners, no appreciation of the game, love the sound of their own voices, spoiling it for everyone, including players

Is that Novak Djokovic or Patrick Rafter out there? #volleyingheaven
I would like to personally smack every spectator who applauds when Djokovic misses a first serve

I'm getting a little tired of all the cynics out there who think Djokovic is faking. Have you not watched the last 3 hours, 45 minutes?

Has anyone heard a time violation been called recently? No, I thought not

                          • Đoković: "Vera u uspeh me dovela ovde"

Uvek sam imao visoke ambicije, najviše moguće ciljeve i to me je i dovelo dovde.

Ako on nije siguran, ostali jesu.
