ICE HOCKEY MEN'S TOURNAMENT
The ice hockey competitions of the 2014 Winter Olympics will be played at two venues located 300 meters from each other in the Olympic Park. The Bolshoy Ice Dome, which seats 12,000, opened in 2012, and will resemble a Fabergé egg. The Shayba Arena, which opened for use in 2013, seats 7,000, and is a moveable structure that will be used after the games in another Russian city. Both venues are international sized (60 meters by 30 meters). 12 teams will compete in the men's tournament. The tournaments will begin on 12 February and concluding on the 23rd.
The tournament will feature 12 countries, 9 qualifying through the IIHF World Ranking, and 3 through subsequent qualifying tournaments. The format will be the same as 2010, there will be three groups of 4 to determine seeding, with four rounds of elimination games. Each group winner receives a bye into the second round, along with the best second place team. The NHL has agreed to allow its players to participate in the tournament.
It will be the fith olympic men tournament to feature National Hockey League players.

Preliminary round
Tiebreak criteria:
In each group, teams will be ranked according to the following criteria:
1. number of points (3 points for a regulation time win, 2 points for an overtime or shootout win, 1 point for an overtime or shootout defeat, 0 points for a regulation time defeat);
2. in case two teams are tied on points, the result of their head-to-head match will determine the ranking;
3. in case three or four teams are tied on points, the following criteria will apply (if, after applying a criterion, only two teams remain tied, the result of their head-to-head match will determine their ranking):
- points obtained in head-to-head matches between the teams concerned;
- goal difference in head-to-head matches between the teams concerned;
- number of goals scored in head-to-head matches between the teams concerned;
- if three teams remain tied, result of head-to-head matches between each of the teams concerned and the remaining team in the group (points, goal difference, goals scored);
- place in 2012 IIHF World Ranking.

Playoff round
Following the completion of the preliminary round, all teams will be ranked 1D through 12D. To determine this ranking, the following criteria will be used in the order presented:
- higher position in the group
- higher number of points
- better goal difference
- higher number of goals scored for
- better 2013 IIHF World Ranking
Olympic Hockey 2014: Strengths and Weaknesses of Every Team
The stage is set for the men's hockey tournament at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and who will skate away with the gold medal is anyone’s guess.
On the biggest stage the world could offer, representatives of 12 nations will be competing for honor, national pride and four years of glory, as the competition runs from Feb. 12–23. With rosters featuring players ranging from national development program teams to those that face off in the National Hockey League on a nightly basis, the level of competition will certainly be comprised of the best of the best.
Powerhouses and underdogs will collide, utilizing fortitude to win while also exploiting flaws in opponents to seek a competitive edge.
Who will be the strongest? Who will be the weakest? Who will medal? Who will bow out?
