Henne era with Dolphins reportedly set to end come March

As if there was any doubt the Miami Dolphins planned to move in new direction at quarterback, look no further than their reported lack of interest in free-agent-to-be Chad Henne.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Tuesday, citing multiple league sources, that the Dolphins do not intend to make Henne an offer when free agency begins in March. Henne, who went 13-18 in four seasons in Miami, began 2011 as the starter, only to have his season end after four games because of a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Matt Moore then took over the starting role and threw for 2,497 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while leading the Dolphins to a 6-6 finish. Moore has one year left on his contract, but the Dolphins have made it clear that they want to add more talent to the position this offseason.

Matt Flynn has been linked to the Dolphins as a possible free-agent acquisition because of his relationship with new head coach Joe Philbin, his former offensive coordinator in Green Bay. If the Dolphins look to the first round of the draft, it's notable that new offensive coordinator Mike Sherman recently praised Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Tannehill, who played under Sherman at Texas A&M, is now rated by many draft experts as the third best quarterback in the draft.

                    • Osi still wants new contract from Giants

Osi Umenyiora wants to stay with the only NFL team he has ever played for. He also wants to get paid what he believes he’s worth. Those feelings haven’t changed, not even after Umenyiora earlier this month, for the second time in four years, played a large role in helping the Giants to another Super Bowl triumph over the Patriots.

“I can see things going either way,” Umenyiora said yesterday on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “I could see where they’d want to keep me, I could see where they’d want to trade me. I am going into the last year of my deal, so they may want to get some value back. They are going to do what’s best for them; I am going to try and do what’s best for me.”

The ball is in the Giants’ court. Umenyiora has one year remaining on the six-year, $41 million extension he signed in December 2005 and is scheduled to make $3.975 million in 2012. He has been unhappy with his contract for years and last summer he went on the offensive, stating in a sworn affidavit he believed general manager Jerry Reese lied to him about a promise to either produce a new contract or else trade him to a team that would come up with a new deal. The Giants last summer gave permission to Umenyiora’s agent, Tony Agnone, to find a trade partner but set the price tag so high — a first-round draft pick — predictably, there were no takers.

“I regret the way it appeared,” Umenyiora said in an interview on WFAN. “It came out as an accusation against Jerry Reese. It wasn’t really that. It was me coming out and saying this is what was promised to me, and because of the lockout it wasn’t able to be done.’’

The glory of a second Super Bowl title in four years has not diminished Umenyiora’s desire for more money. He knows he has been replaced in the starting lineup by rising star Jason Pierre-Paul. This past season, Umenyiora missed seven games, first because of knee surgery and later with a sprained ankle but still showed he’s a premier pass-rusher. He had 12 1/2 sacks in the 13 games he played, including the postseason.

As he waits to see how this all plays out, the 30-year old Umenyiora vowed to keep his situation out of the public domain.

“I am just going to be real quiet, that’s for sure. I am not going to say nothing. I don’t need that,” he said.

It might be difficult for Umenyiora to remain quiet if the Giants are unwilling to meet his financial desires.

“I don’t really expect anybody to say anything about that at least until draft day,” Umenyiora said on Sirius. “They have a lot of things they need to worry about, a lot of actual free agents. I’m still under contract. They have a lot of other free agents they’re going to have to take care of — Victor Cruz — also. But I’m sure something’s going to get done eventually.”

                      • Samuel's future could be decided this week

WILMINGTON — If the Eagles decide to keep Asante Samuel, their star-studded cornerback trio can play together and function effectively.

That’s the message sent recently by general manager Howie Roseman, who said the combination of Samuel, Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie would be more imposing in 2012 than last year.

“Last year was a unique situation in terms of practice time and preparation time, so I think that it gives us an opportunity with this offseason, with a normal offseason, to kind of jell together,” said Roseman, referencing lockout restrictions that canceled offseason practices and delayed free agency from last March until August.

“And you saw that towards the end of the year, the team was jelling, and so that's what we look forward to in 2012.”

By the same token, Roseman didn’t dismiss speculation that the 31-year-old Samuel, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who ranks fifth among active defensive backs with 45 career interceptions, is headed out the door.

The team entertained trade discussions twice last year for Samuel but decided against pulling the trigger. It’s widely assumed they will move him this offseason rather than fork over the $8.4 million he’s due.

Talks likely will heat up this week during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

“Whenever you have a surplus at a particular position there are talks around the league, people call and your phone does ring,” Roseman said, “and that's happened in the past couple years by our quarterback situation and so I think there are particular positions on our team that maybe we had a surplus at and I expect the phone calls to be active.”

The secondary’s improved play over the final month of the season helped fuel the team’s four-game winning streak. But problems with all three Pro Bowl corners adjusting to unfamiliar roles early in the season contributed to their 1-4 start.

After allowing a club-record 31 touchdown passes in 2010, the Eagles allowed 27 last year — ninth-most in the league — despite the trade for Rodgers-Cromartie, who has tremendous closing speed, and free-agent signing of Asomugha, who was then considered the NFL’s best or second-best cover corner.

The Eagles moved Asomugha around in the defense after he was used almost exclusively on the outside with the Raiders and played Rodgers-Cromartie on the inside in the nickel, a position Rodgers-Cromartie learned on the fly.

Samuel recently told reporters at charity event that he hoped to come back next season, but he also spoke out against the front office during the season after hearing his name involved in reports right before the trade deadline.

Roseman avoided specific questions about Samuel’s future but left the door open for any possibility, including trade.

“In terms of talking about a specific player or position obviously I stay away from that. But we're always open to phone calls and to seeing if something works,” Roseman said, “and really if there are win-win situations for particular teams and particular players, we'll look at that and make a decision kind of in a vacuum.”

                        • Are Seahawks the front-runner for Peyton Manning?

The national media seem to finally be realizing the Seahawks exist. After weeks and weeks of talk that Peyton Manning could head to Washington or Miami or Arizona, now there’s talk that Seattle could be a good fit.

Oh really? It’s only what we here in the Pacific Northwest have been saying since the near year. But that’s OK.

Manning may leave Indianapolis after sitting last season out due to a neck injury. The star quarterback has undergone three — nay, reportedly four — surgeries in the past two years, and his superstar arm may not be up to snuff by the start of the 2012 season. If it ever gets there.

The Colts, who in Manning’s absence went 2-14, have the first pick of the NFL draft and likely will pick Stanford QB Andrew Luck. Colts GM Jim Irsay has said it’s up to Manning whether he wants to stay in Indianapolis, where there’s a whole new coaching staff, but it would likely be at a lower salary.

Anyway, the most recent Manning talk comes from the National Football Post:

Based on the buzz around the league, the Seahawks could be the early frontrunner for Peyton Manning, assuming he is released. Pete Carroll needs a quarterback and is believed to have a strong interest in at least exploring Manning.

The Seahawks could offer Manning an attractive scenario. They have a young team with some fine skill players to put around him. They play in one of the league’s loudest stadiums. Manning wouldn’t be subject to the same kind of scrutiny in Seattle that he would in a lot of other markets.

The Seahawks also could have a better feel for Manning’s medical situation than some teams. One of their team physicians, Stan Herring, who also is one of the country’s preeminent specialists for spine injuries. Herring is a member of the NFL’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee.

Yes, the Seahawks need a quarterback, have a great stadium and a good offensive line. And, contrary to how the national media usually think, the Seahawks exist!

But would Seattle really want Manning? He’s reportedly not as healthy as we previously thought. And, at 35 (he’ll be 36 on March 24), he wouldn’t have too many years in Seattle anyway.

Maybe it’s better to pursue Green Bay backup QB Matt Flynn, or use the 11th or 12th draft pick to pick up someone like Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill or Oklahoma State’s Brandon Weeden.

                              • Mathis could be target for Titans

We’re still almost three weeks away from free agency, but it’s about time we started hearing rumors about where certain free agents could land. (This is the Rumor Mill, after all.)

Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean provides some fodder by listing three players he “heard” could be potential targets for Tennessee: Colts defensive end Robert Mathis, Bengals safety Reggie Nelson, and Ravens special teamer Haruki Nakamura.

Mathis headlines the group. Tennessee needs pass rushers and they know Mathis well after facing him twice a year since 2003. Wyatt describes Mathis as a much more affordable option than Mario Williams. (Of course, Mathis is a much older option too.)

Nelson rehabbed his value in Cincinnati. His former secondary coach is now coordinating the Dolphins defense, so Miami may also have interest. Tennessee could decide to use the franchise tag on safety Michael Griffin, which would make signing Nelson unnecessary.

The Colts have a tough decision to make with Mathis. Spending big money on an aging pass rusher doesn’t make sense for a rebuilding team.
