Rafa Roars Into Clay Court Season



Rafael Nadal made an explosive start to his 2008 clay court season at Masters Series Monte-Carlo Wednesday, winning the first eight games of the match en route to a 6-0, 6-3 win over big-serving Croatian Mario Ancic. Chasing a record fourth consecutive Monte-Carlo title, Nadal needed just 76 minutes to advance.

Nadal improved to a 20-1 record in Monte-Carlo, with his only loss coming in the third round to Guillermo Coria in 2003 (did not play in 2004 due to injury). Since that loss, Nadal captured titles over Coria in 2005 and World No. 1 Roger Federer the past two years.

The 21-year-old Mallorca native is playing in his first ATP clay court tournament of the season after compiling a 22-6 match record on hard court. He is looking to capture his first ATP title in nine months since July 22, 2007 in Stuttgart. In his last tournament at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami on April 6, he lost to World No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko in the final.

Nadal next meets 2002-2003 Monte-Carlo champion Juan Carlos Ferrero, who defeated Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 6-3. Ferrer has also reached the semifinals two of the past three years and boasts a 28-6 career record in Monaco.

Nadal has ranked No. 2 for a record 144 consecutive weeks (since July 25, 2005-present). He has a 134-13 career record on clay (18 titles). On clay in 2007 he captured five of his six season titles at AMS Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, AMS Rome, Roland Garros and Stuttgart. His only loss on the surface came to Roger Federer in he Hamburg final, which snapped Nadal's record 81-match clay court winning streak.

He has won 94 of 95 clay court matches since April 2005.

Q. How did you feel that was today?

RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, for sure, today was a very important win for me, no, against No. 5 of the world in his surface, too. So I think was a very important win for me because I lost the last two times against him. So is important, no?

Q. You were three set points down at 5 4. At 40 15, he made a really good dropshot that you got to. Can you talk about that game a little bit.Q. Are the conditions here much slower than Roland Garros?

RAFAEL NADAL: Slower?

Q. Slower or faster?Q. Same?

RAFAEL NADAL: The ball is different. But for the rest I think is not much difference, I think.

Q. Could you talk about playing Nikolay tomorrow?Q. Is the key to annoy you on clay to be aggressive like Ferrer was the second set?Q. Do you feel in better form not than this time last year? The play, do you feel just as comfortable at last year?Can you describe your feeling on your first training session on clay. Just after the Davis Cup in Germany, where was it and what was your feeling to be on clay?

RAFAEL NADAL: I said yesterday, no, is a strange feeling because is a long time without playing on clay. Well, you know, first two days you have more mistakes because the bounce of the ball sometimes are not hundred percent perfect like when you are playing on hard, so you have to adapt. First days are a little bit strange.

Q. So how did you play, Rafa? Were you satisfied with the way you played?
RAFAEL NADAL:
Q. Do you feel you are getting better with every match?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think I am more adapted to clay every match, no? I am feel I play more clay style every day, no?

Q. And you feel more comfortable in yourself?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, sure. But, you know, I have to continuing improve.

Q. RAFAEL NADAL: A lot of risk?

Q. Yes.
RAFAEL NADAL:Q. Which part of his game is most difficult for you to play against on clay?
RAFAEL NADAL:Q. You are the first man to do the fourth final in a row here in Monte Carlo. What does it mean for you?
RAFAEL NADAL: I am the first fourth in a row? So, well, happy for that. That most important, happy for still playing good, no, for continuing playing good. Having last two Masters Series, two finals, the first semifinals, and the first Grand Slam semifinals, too. So I think is a very good start of the 2008 season.
Just I have to continuing like this, no? I think I am playing well. I am doing good work. If I continue like this, I gonna have chances for being in the top positions another time, no?
