      • Defending US Open champ Rafael Nadal is poised for another deep run in Flushing

Things looked bleak for Rafael Nadal back in January. A right hip injury forced him, grimacing and barely ambulatory, to retire in the fifth set of his quarterfinal match at the Australian Open.
In ensuing weeks, Nadal learned his injury was considerably worse than he and his doctors had believed. The Mallorcan wondered if, now into his 30s, he would be able to make a full recovery and play his beloved clay-court season in full health.
Six months ago, Nadal didn’t expect to be here.
And by here, I mean: Here, in Flushing Meadows, arguably the co-favorite with Novak Djokovic to take another US Open title.
After the Australian Open, Nadal didn’t touch a racquet for weeks and didn’t play another tournament for three months, withdrawing from Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami.
Fast forward to August, though, and Nadal is again the world No. 1, now the holder of 17 Grand Slam titles and a record 33 ATP Master’s 1000 tournament wins.
Nadal may have doubted his own ability to rebound from this latest injury scare, but he went on a tear beginning in April. With little on-court practice and almost no match play, he won his first tournament back, the ATP Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo, for the 11th time, not dropping a set and surrendering just 21 games in five matches. As has become a springtime tradition, Nadal very nearly ran the table en route to his 11th French Open crown (adding an 11th win at the Barcelona Open and an eighth ATP Masters title in Rome).
This is the same Rafael Nadal who has been underestimated throughout his career.
Early on, the Spaniard was considered a mere clay-court specialist. It was widely thought that Nadal would never adapt his whiplash topspin groundstrokes and defensive skills to quicker grass or hard courts.
When he did that, spectacularly – winning Wimbledon twice and the US Open three times, as well as the Australian Open – many doubted that Nadal’s body could withstand his grueling style of physical play. Injuries would take their toll and cut his career short, they believed.
Injuries indeed have been a constant for Nadal. He has missed a total of seven Slams and additionally had to withdraw from the 2016 French Open with a wrist injury.
Nadal’s life-long coach, his Uncle Toni, said earlier this year that his nephew has “lived with pain and painkillers since 2005.”
"Many times he's told me that he would have liked to win less in exchange for having less pain," Toni added.
For the third year in a row, serious injuries sidelined Nadal. Yet, to a degree that has shocked even his fans and closest watchers of the game, Nadal has repeatedly, and sensationally, bounced back.
After the French, Nadal played Wimbledon, where he had not advanced past the fourth round since 2011. This year, the Spaniard played injury-free for the first time in many years, and he came within points of reaching the final, losing 10-8 to Novak Djokovic in the fifth set.
Nadal played just a single hard-court tournament leading up to the US Open: the ATP Masters 1000 in Toronto, which Nadal won decisively for a fourth time.
After so many injuries, Nadal is finally taking a page from Roger Federer’s book and being more selective about his playing schedule. “I cannot forget that I am older every year,” he said after his win in Toronto. “If I want to continue playing for a long time on tour, I need to choose the right places to play.”
The Spaniard now holds a massive lead in the ATP rankings. His points total of over 10,000 is nearly 3,000 more than that of No. 2 Roger Federer. Nadal has won five of the eight tournaments he entered this year, building a 40-3 record on the year. Toronto was the 80th title of his career.
Nadal has fine-tuned his game to the demands of hard courts and advancing age. With Carlos Moyà on board as his primary coach, Nadal has put new emphasis on serve placement to win free points. He has transformed his two-fisted backhand into a potent weapon, slapping hard, angled winners and no longer running around the backhand at every opportunity to strike forehands. He is shortening points with more aggressive play.
Some things remain unchanged. Since he burst onto the pro scene at age 15, and won his first major at 19, Nadal has been acclaimed as perhaps the greatest pure competitor the game has ever seen. Through victory and riches and disappointments and injury, Nadal’s unbridled intensity and competitiveness have never wavered.
Two weeks ago in Toronto, Nadal pummeled an inside-out forehand deep to the corner to defeat the game’s newest breakout star, 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, and capture the Rogers Cup. Rafa celebrated as if he had just won his first ATP Masters tournament, not his 33rd.
He leapt in the air and did an exuberant jig just inside the service line. Nadal fell to his knees with clenched fists and thrust his head back toward the skies.
The state of his game? Primed for more heroics.

Winersi VS Unoforced errors Nadala u meču protiv Katchanova
                    1. set 6 - 5
                    2. set 17- 8
                    3. set 10 - 16
                    4. set 14 – 9

Vise brine to koleno.

"Just something that I felt, but I try always during the tournaments don’t speak much about these kind of things. When the tournament is over is better and easier to talk. But my personal feeling is I going to be at my 100% for the next one."

Carlos Moya was in the stands watching and during the interview for ESPN he said:
"Rafa’s knee felt sore but nothing to worry about. Sometimes he feels it more than other but he deals with it really well so that’s not an excuse."

                        S konferencije:
                        Q. What was your thinking after you lost the first set?
RAFAEL NADAL: I have to win the next three

Here's the most remarkable thing to me about Federer: Seems to me that the more you know about tennis, the more amazed you are by the guy. If you know nothing at all about tennis, he's amazing. If you know a little something about tennis—maybe you have played a few times in your life—he's more amazing. If you know a little more about tennis—maybe you played in high school and once had illusions of becoming a pro—he's even MORE amazing. And if you were a great player—if you are a McEnroe or a Connors or a Jim Courier—then Federer is preposterously amazing
