  • Never in this world I was given to see such an amazing guy like Rafael Nadal. When he yesterday told his team: "I can't do it anymore", I realised, for this outstanding athlete, passion goes first. He's almost played the whole match in one leg, but this didn't matter for him. All that mattered was fight. Fight till the end, play for the fans and for himself too. I'm sad your amazing season ended this way, but I'm prouder than ever of your insane personality and character. You give everything on court and that's what I try to learn from you. Thank you so much, Rafa, for everything. But I mainly want to thank you for being a role model for every person in this world. Even if you don't consider yourself "an idol", I guarantee you there are many people who find themselves in you. Take a veeery well-deserved rest and I can't wait to see you next year!

    • Then and now: Rafael Nadal

An incredible 10 victories at Roland Garros highlight Rafael Nadal’s Grand Slam CV.
His first major triumph came on the clay of Roland Garros in 2005. And 12 years later, he triumphed at the same venue this year.
But how does the playing style, technique and tactics of his pirate-panted teenage years compare to what he produced in 2017?
Tennismash sat down with Todd Woodbridge to analyse how the world No.1’s game has evolved during his tenure at the top. We looked specifically at highlights from his win over Roger Federer in the 2005 French Open semifinals and his 2017 final win over another Swiss with a one-handed backhand in Stan Wawrinka.
Some top-line notes? Woodbridge believes Nadal’s serve and forehand have undergone the most significant changes in the years between his first and last Parisian victories.

      Serve
In 2005, Nadal’s delivery was characterised by an abbreviated take-back and its sliding, spinning, safe nature. Woodbridge says that while he was physically strong for his age, Nadal’s serving technique hadn’t fully developed – it was difficult for him to hit flatter, more powerful serves. Fast forward to 2017, and a now longer takeaway has allowed Nadal more time to load up into the serve, which gives him greater variation, increased power and the ability to hit a flatter serve for more free points. Want proof? Check out the 2017 highlights from the 1:13-minute mark, and the three forceful serves Rafa throws down to extract return errors from Stan.

      Forehand
Against Federer in 2005, Nadal’s forehand was a huge weapon. Woodbridge says that in those days he enjoyed better preparation and a longer swing path that resulted in a smoother, flatter shot with more penetration. In recent years, the shot has become more vulnerable. Woodbridge notes the Spaniard’s more abrupt, delayed swing, loopier shot production and reduced penetration. “He’s less likely to hit a flatter, clean winner,” Woodbridge says. “He’s at times more cramped on the forehand – therefore it’s not as long a swing and he’s now catching up to the ball, which causes him to be late on the shot. It becomes ‘spinnier’ and he drops it more short.”
In the video at the top of the story, we compare Nadal’s forehand at the Australian Opens of 2005 and 2017. The pattern of play is identical – he hits a forehand down the line, before dancing around his backhand to strike an inside-out forehand winner. Yet while he finished his down-the-line shot in 2005 with his racquet across his body, the same shot in 2017 was played with his trademark ‘lasso’ swing, following through on the same side of his body and producing a shot with slightly more arc and safety.

      Backhand

While Nadal’s forehand may no longer be as venomous as it once was, it’s the opposite story on his backhand wing. In 2005, he played the shot from a much wider, more open stance – regardless of where he was in the court. Yet he’s shored up the shot in more recent years, and in the 2017 footage is playing the shot using a more compact, sometimes closed stance. “He used to be more open and wait for the ball to come to him,” Woodbridge observed. “But his technique now allows him to get up onto a shorter ball quicker and easier and his backhand is more of a weapon. He’s balanced up the groundstrokes – the forehand has gone down a bit, but the backhand has come up a bit.”

      Movement
The Nadal of 2005 was a faster, more agile and fluid mover: “as you would expect from a younger player with a lighter frame,” Woodbridge says. Not that his court coverage in 2017 is a weakness, as the point beginning at the 50-second mark of the Wawrinka highlights demonstrates …

      Net
Woodbridge believes that Nadal is increasingly aware and confident of finishing points at net. “He’s become a competent volleyer,” he says. “He used to avoid the net more – now he’s more confident there. And still continuing to improve.”

      • Dr. Cotorro: 'Rafael Nadal will undergo a precautionary treatment'

In an interview to Tablero Deportivo on RTVE, Rafael Nadal's doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro commented on Nadal's withdrawal from the ATP World Tour Finals on Monday. 'That's sport. You come to the end of the year with issues and the tournament becomes even harder and more complicated.
The best thing Rafa can ever do is to take a rest, go home, congratulate himself for the season he has had and recover in order to re-start in 2018,' Dr. Cotorro said. When commented that Nadal had seemed fine during his practice sessions at the O2, Dr.

Cotorro said, 'It's not the same thing to train and then compete. There was a good evolution, but then things need to be seen in competition. We will take other tests to choose the right course [of treatment] and he will undergo a precautionary treatment.' What this injury caused because of Nadal's schedule? 'It's the year where he played fewer tournaments.

18 including London. Others played more. Considering the amazing season he had, schedule was correct.'

        • Rafa: "There are some kind of situations you can't control & just have to accept things as they happen. Sometimes things a good, sometimes things are bad, which has been the case in these last 2 events of the season.
Since the SF in Shanghai, when the knee got substantially worse, I've stopped enjoying. Be it in the Shanghai Final or in the 2 matches I played in Bercy (I also had to withdraw from Basel), it's been tough, though it's true that in Paris, for the fact of being Paris,
a very important city for me & that w/just 1 win I could secure the YE #1, all things together pushed me to try. But I knew it was a very difficult end of the season for me due to the state of the knee. By experience I know how difficult it was to recover it in so little time.
But I've tried till the end, though it hasn't been possible. Anyway, it's time to thank life for an unforgettable and overall fantastic season. It's a pity to end it this way, but now it's the moment to accept, to work to recover & be ready when we start again."

          • Nadal will not have to play with a service clock in Australia
Many have been the headlines that in recent days have put the "cry in the sky" about a "new enemy" for Rafa Nadal at the next Australian Open , the alleged "watch" on the electronically controlled court. Nothing is further from reality.

The SERVE CLOCK rule will ONLY apply for the qualifying rounds, as it did at the US Open.

In this way, the Grand Slams have clarified that the electronic clock controlling the time of service limited to 25 seconds will be established only in the qualification phase of the tournament but never in the main draw . On the other hand, other rules that will be applicable in the main draw will be those of reducing the warm-up time and the prizes destined for losses in the first round.

              • Rafael Nadal opens up on injury problems in anxiety revelation
RAFAEL NADAL has revealed he struggled with anxiety as he came to terms with injury problems in 2015.
In 2014, Nadal underwent stem cell treatment on his back at the end of the season to help repair cartilage after the injury had hampered his season.
Nadal lost in the Australian Open final after struggling with the back issue as he played Stanislas Wawrinka.
He was able to win the French Open for a ninth time but his year finished early when he had his appendix removed.
But in 2015, Nadal won just three tournaments as he dropped to five in the world.
He reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the French Open but was dumped out of Wimbledon and the US Open in the second and third rounds respectively.
This year, Nadal has risen back to the top of the men’s game as he won the French and US Open to finish as world No 1.
In an interview with Spanish outlet El Mundo, Nadal has opened up about the anxiety which disrupted in his 2015 but revealed the feelings have now disappeared.
He said: “In 2014, I linked several injuries and health problems, all of which caused 2015 to start with doubts, and those doubts produced an anxiety that was unknown to me until then, the reality being that this internal stress lasted for six or seven months.
"I have not had them again, they have disappeared, what can they come back to? It is possible.”
He added: “No one fails if he does his best to win, he fails when he does not try hard enough to achieve his goals.
“Everything possible is done to win, but there are uncontrollable factors, that for me is not to fail, I have never let myself go in games or in training.”
