Stan Wawrinka and the art of winning a Grand Slam title against all odds
Tennis -
Following his historic victory over world number 1 Novak Djokovic on Sunday evening in the US Open final, Stan Wawrinka has snapped off yet another Grand Slam title from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic, the 3 dominant figures in the greatest tennis events over the last 12 years. He defeated the mighty Serb 6-7 6-4 7-5 6-3 in 3 hours and 55 minutes of titanic struggle, taking just one point more than Novak who also had his chances to bring the victory home, despite losing 3-1. Thus, Wawrinka is now a three-time Grand Slam champion, as the 21st player in the Open era who managed to achieve that. Unlike some other players, he set them out perfectly, winning one title each at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and US Open, in 3 back-to-back seasons, which is extremely hard in today's tennis. Since 1990, only 8 players have managed to win at least one Grand Slam crown in 3 consecutive seasons, before Stan, it was achieved by Stefan Edberg, Jim Courier, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, which is not a bad company to be included with! In addition, he is the 15th player of the Oper era who won 3 different Grand Slams, with only Wimbledon that is now missing in his collection, and the first since Andre Agassi who won the first 3 titles in 3 different Slams. At the age of 31 years and 5 months, Wawrinka is the oldest US Open champion since great Ken Rosewall in 1970, and also the 5th player in the Open era who won two Majors after turning 30, behind Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi, and the oldest winner in general since Agassi lifted his last Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open 2003.
All of these achievements are really nice, but looking at Wawrinka's career in general, they were probably supposed not ever to happen! Fro example, he is now on the same number of Grand Slam titles with Andy Murray, the winner of 39 ATP titles (15 for Wawrinka), 12 Masters 1000 crowns (1), who defeated Top 10 opponent 94 times (46), and who has been in the Top 10 constantly since 2008, with the exception of a few weeks in 2014. Even if we don't consider Murray as a part of the "Big 4" in the last 8 years or so, he at least achieved far more than any other player who tried to confront all time great players with 17, 14 and 12 Grand Slam crowns respectively. Despite the fact he won 57 Grand Slam matches more than Stan and played in 11 finals (against virtually the same opponents since they started to play Majors at the same time), Murray is tied with Wawrinka in the number of Grand Slam titles won, which will soon bring us to the topic about how Stan delivered his best tennis whenever he needed it. We should not forget that Andy is still a much more accomplished player than Stan in terms of rankings and everything, but he will for sure not like the fact that Swiss number 1 is on the even terms with him in the biggest events.
Wawrinka was a junior Grand Slam champion and a player from whom we could expect a decent career, but despite the fact he cracked the Top at the age of 23 in 2008, Stan entered the 2014 season with only 4 small ATP titles under his belt, which makes his transition into a true champion even more impressive. Another element is important when he talk about somebody's greatness, and that's consistency. From Federer, Nadal (at least until 2014), Djokovic, and even Murray, fans can always expect from them to go deep and reach the latter stages over and over again, which was never the case with Stan, even from 2014. Fro example, until the spring of 2008 he wasn't able to make back-to-back ATP semi-finals (Barcelona and Rome) and he will not repeat that until February 2012 (Buenos Aires and Acapulco). All in all, Wawrinka has made at least semi-final in back-to-back ATP tournaments only 7 times during his career, which is a staggeringly low number for someone who is a three-time Grand Slam champion. He had to wait until the US Open 2007 to make the 4th round at a Grand Slam for the first time, and another 3 more years to advance to his first quarter-final, at the age of 25. US Open was again the crucial Major, as he made his first semi-final entrance there in 2013, beating Tomas Berdych and Andy Murray in back-to-back matches and losing to Novak Djokovic in 5 close sets. He was 28 and a half at that point, but for the first time in his career, Stan Wawrinka looked like a Grand Slam contender, something he will cement really soon!
2014 was the turning point of his career, starting from the Australian Open. In the quarter-final round, Stan avenged his US Open defeat to Djokovic, beating the Serb 9-7 in the 5th set of what turned out to be an epic encounter. Stan has never beat Novak after 2006 and Umag final (Novak was forced to retire) but it seemed that he found a winning formula against the player who was fighting for his 15th consecutive Grand Slam semi-final appearance! He was very aggressive from both wings, managing to stay in touch with a mighty opponent for 4 hours both physically and mentally, and to win the crucial points, delivering the best tennis when it mattered the most. This was exactly what Andy Murray has been missing in his reach arsenal over the years, and the lack of the "killing instinct" prevented him from achieving more in the biggest tennis stage. Stan was now ready to go all the way, he prevailed over Tomas Berdych in the semi-final, for his first Grand Slam final appearance just before his 29th birthday (never say never!). In a rather strange match, he ousts Rafael Nadal to clinch his maiden Grand Slam title, and this will change his career from the grounds. Including that US Open 2013, Stan has played 13 Majors and reached 10 quarter-finals, 7 semi-finals, and what is most importantly, he notched 3 Grand Slam titles from the same number of finals played, beating Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic in the title matches! In the rest of 2014, his form was up and down, as always, but he won his first and so far only Masters 1000 crown in Monte Carlo, with last 8 appearances at Wimbledon and US Open, losing to Roger Federer and Kei Nishikori.
Stan opened his 2015 campaign with the semi-final loss in Melbourne to Novak Djokovic, after another 5-setter, but his time came again very shortly, as he played amazing tennis to win his second Major crown at Roland Garros. He came to Paris after mediocre results, but from the opening round, it was clear that he have ethe potential to go all the way, reaching the final with only 2 sets lost. In the quarter-final, Stan has simply blown out from the court his compatriot and friend Roger Federer, prevailing over home favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-final to reach his second Grand Slam final. Novak Djokovic waited there yet again, seeking that elusive first Roland Garros crown, but Stan had some other plans. In another classic between these two players, he defeated Novak 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4, for his second Grand Slam title. Following his title in Rotterdam, Wawrinka arrived in Paris with the poor 8-7 score, but once again saving his best tennis for the biggest stage, bringing his A game against the best player in the world in the final and receiving the sympathies from whole tennis world for his bold and brave tennis. Novak won the opening set and in those situations, he is always an overwhelming favorite to bring the match home, but just like at the Australian Open 2014 Stan has managed to turn the result around, winning the next 3 sets with an insane level of tennis. Using the slower court to have enough time to get to the ball early and prepare his shots, Stan was pouring winners from both wings and from every position on the court. He was 3-0 down in the 4th set but he pulled the break back and saved 4 break points in the final 2 service games to clinch the victory and lift his second Grand Slam title, showing an impressive level of mental toughness against the world's best player.
So, Stan was now a two-time Grand Slam champion, but he had no intentions to stay on that number, winning his 3rd title at just finished US Open, against all odds and predictions. He had a good start of 2016, winning the titles in Chennai and Dubai, but he lost to Milos Raonic in the 4th round of the Australian Open. After Dubai, Wawrinka lost his form completely, winning just 5 matches in 5 spring Masters 1000 events, which was a very poor result for the player ranked 4th in the world. Before Roland Garros, he claimed his 3rd title of the season at home in Geneva, and had a good run in Paris, reaching the semi-final where he lost to Andy Murray. Grass season is also something that he wanted to forget as soon as possible, and his best result before the US Open came in Toronto when he reached the semi-final. All in all, he played 15 events before heading to New York, failing to reach at least the quarter-final in 8 of them and this was the first time since 2005 that he came to the US Open without a victory over Top 10 player! Without Federer, all eyes were set upon Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, who were supposed to meet in the final, and after a poor start of his campaign Stan was really under the radar in any kind of predictions. He passed the first two rounds in straight sets but had to work hard in 5 out of 6 sets against Fernando Verdasco and Alessandro Giannessi to reach the 3rd round.
The things were pretty much going from bad to worse, as he had to use all oh his strength and stamina to prevail over world number 64, Daniel Evans in 5 close sets. Deciding moment for the whole tournament came in the closing stages of the 4th set, Stan saved a break point in the 11th game (he was 2-1 down in sets) and a match point at 5-6 in the tie break with a great forehand volley. He managed to win the set and send the match into a decider, where Evans had nothing to offer and Stan moved on after 4 hours and 2 minutes. Wawrinka lost another set against Illya Marchenko in Round of 16, setting up an interesting quarter-final battle with Juan Martin del Potro. From this point, there were no more "easy" rivals and both Magnus Norman Stan knew it, preparing him better for the ultimate challenges. He started to play better tennis against both del Potro and Kei Nishikori in the semi-final, and out of sudden he was in his 3rd Grand Slam final, where basically only a few people expected to see him. Nevertheless, his goal was realized and the title match was something completely different from the results in previous rounds and the amount of time he had to spend on the court. After all that was written in the article so far, there was no doubt that Wawrinka would produce his best tennis in the final, knowing how to beat Novak and with the abilities to stay in touch with him even for 4 hours, which will be required as we will see. Novak had a 19-4 in the H2H meetings, but in the last 3 seasons, Stan has won 2 out of 3 Grand Slam matches against a great rival, knowing how to impose his game and to carry his tactics throughout the match.
The final match was a true classic, another one between these two rivals in the biggest stage, and Stan won it 6-7 6-4 7-5 6-3 after 3 hours and 55 minutes of out of this world shotmaking from both sides, in a fearless battle of deep powerful shots and amazing rallies that lasted until the last point. Despite a 3-1 score, the match could easily go to any side, as Novak won just one point less than Stan (144-143). Also, the Serb had 17 break points but he converted just 3 of them. He was once again overpowered by Wawrinka in the crucial moments, as Swiss proved his mental strength and believing in his abilities for the 3rd time in big finals. Novak has won more points on return, and on both the first and second serve, and we can't say that he needed any better tennis against Stan on fast hard court from the one he showed here, but he simply lacked his usual edge that he possess over the other players in the most important points. This can be due to his problems with shoulder, that prevent him from serving better than this 51% and to score more free points, which is always important, but also due to his form after winning the Roland Garros, and the lack of competitive matches played during the summer and in this tournament in particular. Still, even with all that on his mind, Novak would almost for sure won this match against any other opponent, anyone but Stan who simply played in the same way from start to finish, going for shots and never letting the initiative to Novak, finishing the match with amazing 46 winners and 51 unforced errors.
Two things are symptomatic for both 2015 Roland Garros and 2016 US Open finals. First of all, Novak had a terrible realization of break points (5 from 27 in total) and in both matches he started by winning the opening set. Overall, Djokovic's rivals are done and dusted once they lose the first set against him in Grand Slams, as he stands at an impressive 193-5 record, but 3 of those defeats comes against Stan since 2014, and every time he would beat Novak after losing the opening set, Stan was crowned the Grand Slam champion!
